Privacy Policy

RandomSeat.com ("RandomSeat," "we," "the site") is a free browser-based tool that helps teachers draw classroom layouts, build seating charts, and randomize student seating. This page explains what data the site touches, how it's used, and what it never does with it.

The short version

Data you create in the app

Tables, chairs, your student roster, and any "keep apart" groups you create live entirely in your browser tab's memory while you use the site. RandomSeat has no backend server or database that stores this information. When you use "Export Classroom," a file is generated and saved directly by your browser to your own device — it never passes through our servers.

Google Classroom import

If you choose "Import from Google Classroom," the site asks you to sign in with your Google account through Google's own sign-in flow. This requests permission to read:

This data is requested directly from Google's Classroom API by your browser, using an access token Google issues to you. It is loaded straight into your seating chart and is never transmitted to, processed by, or stored on any server we operate. We do not have access to your Google account, your classes, or your students' information at any point. You can revoke this access at any time from your Google Account permissions page.

Print to Google Classroom Stream

If you choose "Print to Google Classroom Stream," the site uses the same Google sign-in to also request permission to:

Using these permissions, your browser generates a PDF of your seating chart and a PDF broken out by table, uploads both directly to your own Google Drive, and posts them as an announcement to the Stream of the class you choose. This entire process runs in your browser using your own Google account credentials — the generated PDFs and their contents (including student names visible in the seating chart) are never sent to, or stored on, any server we operate.

Analytics

RandomSeat uses Google Analytics to understand overall site traffic — things like page views, approximate location (city/country level), device type, and referring site. This is aggregate, anonymized usage data, separate from anything you build in the seating chart tool itself, and it never includes student names, rosters, or layouts. See Google's Privacy Policy for how Google Analytics handles this data. You can opt out using a browser extension like Google's Analytics Opt-out Add-on.

Cookies and local storage

The site does not use cookies to identify or track you personally. Google Analytics may set its own standard analytics cookies as described in Google's policy above.

Children's information

RandomSeat is a tool for teachers, not for use directly by students, and it is not directed at children. Student names entered or imported by a teacher are processed entirely within the teacher's own browser and are never collected, stored, or transmitted by us. Teachers are responsible for using the tool in accordance with their school's and jurisdiction's student-data policies (such as FERPA in the United States).

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be revised. Continued use of the site after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
